Rising suicide attempts by out-of-region visitors in Lake District mountains prompt rescue teams to offer urgent mental health support.
Mountain rescue teams in the Lake District are reporting a rise in calls involving people in mental distress or attempting suicide, primarily from visitors outside the region, often drawn by personal memories.
While most incidents involve middle-aged men, the teams, trained in mental health awareness, provide critical support in remote areas where other services can't reach.
Ops Lead Nick Owen emphasized the emotional toll on rescuers and urged public empathy, noting those in crisis are overwhelmed, not selfish.
Support is available 24/7 through Samaritans at 116 123 or jo@samaritans.org.
