The National Trust created a bird sanctuary in Essex by sinking three old barges to protect shorebirds and reduce erosion.
The National Trust has sunk three decommissioned 1950s Thames lighters off Essex’s coast in the Blackwater Estuary to create a 0.55-hectare bird sanctuary.
The vessels, cleaned and prepared by specialists, were intentionally damaged and filled with sediment from Maldon Harbour via around 170 dredge trips to form a stable, elevated island.
The new habitat, about the size of a football pitch, will provide a safe refuge for declining shorebird species including curlews, lapwings, and terns.
It also aims to reduce erosion of the nearby Northey Island saltmarsh, a vital carbon sink and natural flood defense.
The project, described as pioneering marine recycling, will be monitored as birds begin to use the site.
