Namibia is vaccinating children under 10 against polio after virus detection in sewage, aiming to close immunity gaps.
Namibia has launched a nationwide polio vaccination campaign targeting children under 10, using the novel oral polio vaccine type 2, following the detection of poliovirus type 2 in sewage in Kavango East in November 2025.
Though no cases have been confirmed, officials cite an immunity gap among children born after routine type 2 vaccination ended.
The campaign, led by the Ministry of Health and supported by WHO and UNICEF, includes two rounds in January and February, with door-to-door visits and outreach in schools, markets, and remote areas.
All children under 10, regardless of prior vaccination, are to receive two doses to strengthen community immunity and prevent potential outbreaks.
