A federal judge in Minnesota has threatened to hold acting ICE Director Todd Lyons in contempt of court if he does not appear in court to explain why the agency has consistently disregarded court orders requiring bond hearings for detained immigrants.
Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz issued the order in the midst of growing legal and public criticism of immigration enforcement tactics, including claims of protracted detention without due process and a recent crackdown that sparked protests and several fatalities.
Citing unprecedented noncompliance, the judge emphasized that the situation compromises the rule of law and that lesser remedies have failed.
The appearance is set for this Friday.
