An inmate at the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex, Marvin Knuckles, 48, died on January 27, 2026, after falling and sustaining a head injury while clearing snow and ice on facility grounds.
Knuckles, serving a 12-year sentence for drug-related offenses, was transported to Appalachian Regional Hospital, where he died around 7:30 a.m.
The incident occurred during severe winter weather and marks the second storm-related fatality in Kentucky this winter.
The Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet confirmed the death, stating it will conduct a thorough review and that the Kentucky State Police have been notified as required.
Secretary Keith Jackson expressed condolences to Knuckles’ family and staff.
