Hindalco Industries has announced a ₹21,000 crore expansion of its aluminium smelter in Odisha, adding 360,000 tonnes of annual smelting capacity and launching India’s first battery-grade aluminium foil facility.
The project, part of a larger ₹55,000 crore capital plan, aims to reduce India’s reliance on imported flat-rolled aluminium—currently about 40% of domestic demand—by nearly half.
The expansion supports India’s push for self-reliance in critical materials for electric vehicles and clean energy storage, with over 15,000 new jobs expected.
The initiative was inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi amid broader state efforts to drive industrial growth, including nearly ₹20 lakh crore in planned projects.
