Halifax councillors urge stronger dog laws after two fatal attacks, seeking provincial action by Feb. 24.
Halifax councillors Trish Purdy and Cathy Deagle-Gammon are introducing a motion urging the provincial government to strengthen dangerous dog laws, citing recent fatal attacks including the January 3 death of 13-year-old Drew Nickerson in Welshtown and another in Shelburne County.
The motion calls for provincial oversight, stricter penalties for owners, mandatory seizure of dogs after serious incidents, and restrictions on moving dangerous animals between jurisdictions.
If approved, the city will prepare a report and urge Mayor Andy Fillmore to request provincial action by February 24.
