Greenland’s Sirius Dogsled Patrol conducts critical winter missions across remote Arctic terrain, using dog sleds to ensure security and environmental protection.
Greenland’s Sirius Dogsled Patrol, a Danish military unit, conducts vital winter patrols across northern and eastern Greenland, covering an area larger than France and Spain combined.
Six two-man teams travel up to 30 km daily on dog sleds, enduring temperatures as low as -40°C, to monitor for unauthorized activity, assist stranded vessels, and enforce environmental protections.
Despite criticism, including from former U.S. President Donald Trump, the unit remains essential due to the reliability of dog sleds in extreme conditions where snowmobiles and aircraft fail.
Only five to six recruits are selected annually from 80 to 100 applicants after intense evaluations, serving 26 months without leave.
Established in 1950, the patrol continues to play a key role in Arctic security with no women having applied to date.
