Former rugby star John Tobin, 66, avoids jail for past drug crimes after serving 8.5 years and showing rehabilitation.
Former Sydney Roosters captain John Tobin, 66, has been spared jail for multiple drug offences from 2014 after admitting to them in Brisbane Supreme Court.
Tobin, a former rugby league star with 125 appearances in the 1980s, had already served eight-and-a-half years in prison for a major cocaine smuggling operation involving 1.4 tonnes of the drug.
Released on parole in June 2025, he appeared in court in January 2026 and was granted leniency, avoiding further incarceration due to his extensive time served and rehabilitation efforts.
The decision reflects the court’s consideration of prior punishment and the passage of time.
