An Escondido officer shot a man at a halfway house after he emerged with a stick despite being told to stop.
An Escondido police officer shot a man early Tuesday morning at a halfway house near Grand Avenue and Elm Street after the man, reportedly injured and armed with a knife, barricaded himself in a bathroom. After negotiations and a temporary evacuation, the man emerged with a 24-inch stick, advanced despite commands to stop, and was shot multiple times. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The officer was not injured. The San Diego Police Department is investigating under a regional agreement. The man and officer remain unidentified. The knife has not been recovered.
