Composer Philip Glass canceled his symphony's premiere at the Kennedy Center over Trump's influence, citing conflicting values.
The world premiere of composer Philip Glass's Symphony No.
15, "Lincoln," at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has been canceled.
Glass cited a conflict between the center's current leadership under President Donald Trump and the values of the symphony, which are inspired by Abraham Lincoln's defense of democracy.
Due to controversy surrounding Trump's influence, including the proposed rebranding and the addition of his name to the venue's facade, the June 2026 performance, which was scheduled to be led by Karen Kamensek, was cancelled.
According to Glass, a 2018 Kennedy Center Honoree, the center's current course runs counter to the message of the work.
His choice comes after a number of artists, such as Béla Fleck and Renée Fleming, left due to worries about political influence on cultural establishments.
The cancellation has not received a public response from the Kennedy Center.
