Colorado proposes stricter penalties for dangerous passing and speeding to combat rising traffic deaths.
A Colorado bill introduced by Sen. Dylan Roberts seeks to reduce dangerous driving by raising penalties for passing on solid or double-solid yellow lines from four to eight points and requiring court hearings for repeat speeding offenders.
The measure, SB 35, responds to a rise in traffic fatalities—701 in 2025—and increased crashes on mountain and rural roads, including deadly incidents in Grand County and high crash rates on Highway 40 and I-70.
It also mandates improved signage in passing zones and has been referred to the Senate Transportation and Energy Committee.
