A Belize-based credit card fraud ring using stolen cards to buy and resell event tickets was busted by cybercrime units.
A sophisticated credit card fraud scheme using Belize’s Kwiqpass app has been uncovered, with fraudsters using stolen cards to buy event tickets, then redeeming them before chargebacks occur.
Initially detected during the Belize International Music Festival, the scam prompted Kwiqpass to tighten security, including name-matching and restricting U.S.-based cards.
Despite these measures, criminals adapted, leading to real-time intervention by Belize’s Cybercrime Unit, which apprehended suspects at an event.
Authorities warn the fraud is now organized, involving stolen identities, and poses a serious threat to the digital ticketing industry, risking consumer trust and jobs.
Investigations continue.
