Australia funds $30.7M project to mass-produce self-driving freight vehicles in Melbourne.
A $30.7 million investment from Australia’s National Reconstruction Fund is accelerating the production of self-driving, seatless, windowless vehicles in Melbourne, marking the fund’s first move in the transport sector.
The funding, which covers over half of Applied Electric Vehicles’ Series B round, will support the manufacturing of the company’s Blanc Robots—autonomous freight vehicles built from Suzuki chassis and equipped with Australian-made software and components.
Production is expected to begin within a year, with the company expanding its workforce by 25 employees.
The initiative is part of a broader national strategy to boost domestic manufacturing in key sectors, following other major investments in electric transport, including Volvo’s electric truck production in Queensland and plans for electric prime-movers in New South Wales.
