Alabama introduces bill to regulate crypto ATMs after fraud losses nearly doubled in 2026.
Alabama Representative Russell Bedsole has introduced House Bill 303 to combat a surge in cryptocurrency ATM scams, following a near-doubling of fraud complaints in 2026 and millions in losses reported by the Alabama Securities Commission.
The bill seeks to regulate crypto ATMs—often in convenience stores—similarly to bank ATMs, including daily transaction limits to reduce losses.
It was prompted by high-profile cases, such as a Huntsville woman losing over $330,000 and a retired veteran in Enterprise losing $250,000, amid scams involving fake jury duty notices and romance fraud.
The commission supports the bill, which is expected to gain bipartisan backing and move to a floor vote in February, with potential approval from Governor Kay Ivey.
Penalties for scammers are still under discussion.
