The Washington Commanders hired Daronte Jones as their new defensive coordinator to revamp a struggling defense.
The Washington Commanders are hiring Daronte Jones, the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, as their new defensive coordinator, replacing Joe Whitt Jr. after a 5-12 season in which the defense ranked last in the NFL in total yards allowed and 27th in points allowed.
Jones, 47, brings over two decades of NFL coaching experience, including roles with the Dolphins, Bengals, and LSU, and is known for developing defensive backs and implementing aggressive schemes.
His hiring marks a major shift for the Commanders, who are rebuilding a struggling defense after a steep decline from their 12-5, NFC Championship Game appearance in 2024.
The move is expected to be finalized soon, with Jones set to take over leadership of the defense ahead of the 2026 season.
