Two Taiwanese men indicted for spying for China, with one facing over 10 years in prison.
Two Taiwanese nationals, former Executive Yuan official Cheng Ming-chia and retired official Hu Peng-nian, were indicted under Taiwan’s National Security Act for allegedly running an espionage network for China’s Communist Party in 2021.
Prosecutors say Cheng, linked to CCP-affiliated groups in Guangzhou, recruited Hu—then in China—to enlist military, government, and young political figures to gather sensitive information, marking a shift toward infiltrating Taiwan’s political institutions.
Despite most recruitment attempts failing, authorities deemed the scheme a serious national security threat.
Cheng, with prior convictions, faces at least 10 years in prison, while Hu, who confessed and showed remorse, may receive a lighter sentence.
Both remain in custody following a High Court ruling.
