Santos launched commercial LNG exports from Australia’s Barossa project, shipping its first cargo to Japan on January 25, 2026.
Santos has shipped the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from the Barossa project off Australia’s northern coast, marking the project’s commercial start-up.
The cargo, loaded on the Kool Blizzard at Darwin LNG on January 25, 2026, is bound for Japan’s Sakai terminal under a delivered ex-ship agreement.
Operated by Santos with partners PRISM and JERA, the project, which began production in September 2025, is part of a $3.6 billion investment and is expected to deliver around 1.3 million tons of LNG annually for 20 years.
The milestone, achieved on budget and within six months of the planned start, supports Australia’s role as a key LNG supplier to Asia and is projected to boost the Northern Territory’s economy with 300 permanent jobs and A$2.5 billion in wages and contracts over two decades.
A separate fund will provide up to A$10 million annually to support Indigenous communities.
