A Russian captain detained by U.S. forces after his sanctioned tanker was seized in international waters is the subject of a Scottish legal challenge over unlawful detention.
The wife of Avtandil Kalandadze, captain of the Russian-flagged tanker Marinera (formerly Bella 1), has filed a judicial review in Scotland, alleging her husband was unlawfully detained by U.S. forces on January 7, 2026, after the vessel was seized in international waters between Iceland and Scotland.
The ship, linked to sanctioned Venezuelan oil and previously flying a false Guyanese flag, was intercepted with UK military support but no boarding.
Lawyers for Kalandadze’s wife argue he is in legal limbo without access to court and have sought an emergency order to prevent removal from Scottish jurisdiction.
The petition, filed at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, names the UK and U.S. governments as respondents.
The UK and U.S. have not commented, and a full hearing is expected soon.
