Republicans appeal a judge’s decision to redraw New York’s 11th District, citing racial vote dilution.
Republicans have appealed a New York state judge’s ruling that invalidated the congressional district map for the state’s only Republican-held seat, represented by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis.
The judge found the district’s boundaries diluted the voting power of Black and Hispanic voters, ordering a new map by February 6.
The appeal is pending before both a mid-level appeals court and New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals, which previously rejected partisan maps and ordered court-appointed experts to redraw districts.
The case is part of a broader national debate over gerrymandering following redistricting efforts in Republican-controlled states.
New York’s current congressional delegation includes 19 Democrats and 7 Republicans, with district lines currently drawn by Democrats after rejecting a bipartisan proposal.
The Court of Appeals has not set a date for hearing the appeal.
