A Queensland trial for a man accused of rape and attempted murder is delayed six months due to DNA testing backlogs and lab issues.
A Queensland Supreme Court trial for John Ikundu Karanja, accused of attempted murder and rape in a 2024 Brisbane massage parlour attack, has been delayed by at least six months due to a backlog in forensic DNA testing.
The delay stems from the unavailability of a forensic scientist to confirm DNA results showing Karanja’s DNA was not found on the alleged weapon, despite testing being completed.
Justice Peter Davis called the situation “simply outrageous,” citing the critical role of DNA evidence in modern cases.
The delay follows reports of contamination and years-long backlogs at Forensic Science Queensland, prompting a review of major case evidence.
Karanja remains in custody, with bail not possible due to immigration detention risks.
The trial may now begin in late September, with no new date set.
