NZ Post is closing 142 urban stores by 2026, shifting focus to parcel services amid changing customer habits.
NZ Post is closing services at 142 urban retail stores by 2026 as part of a network overhaul, reducing its urban store count to 567.
The change, enabled by a new government-deed agreement resetting minimum store requirements for the first time since the 1980s, reflects shifting customer habits with parcel services now dominating over letter delivery.
While some areas may see distances over 10km to the nearest store, the company says 90% of urban Kiwis will remain within 4km.
Upgrades and new retail hubs in Auckland, Christchurch, and Palmerston North will focus on parcel collection and returns.
Rural stores are unaffected.
