Ireland’s child welfare agency Tusla is spending about €26,500 weekly—part of a €1.38 million annual budget—for a therapeutic care placement in Scotland for a vulnerable teenager who has not yet moved there due to ongoing legal processes.
The facility, a voluntary therapeutic center with an ADHD-friendly school not available in Ireland, has received consent from Scottish authorities, and Tusla has legal authority to proceed without a High Court order.

Judge Alec Gabbett criticized the expenditure before the child’s arrival, calling it unacceptable, while the child’s guardian urged faster action, citing worsening condition.
The case was adjourned to February 5.
