Illinois' diversity commission, despite high pay and a large budget, has failed to grow minority- and women-owned business certifications, sparking calls for an audit.
An investigation by The Center Square reveals Illinois’ diversity commission, created in 2022 to boost spending with minority- and women-owned businesses, pays its seven commissioners $150,000 annually with no full-time work requirement, while the number of certified minority- and women-owned businesses has nearly halved since its launch.
Despite a $7 million budget and over 30 staff, the commission’s effectiveness is questioned due to a flawed certification system and lack of transparency.
Lawmakers, including Rep. La Shawn Ford and Rep. Adam Niemerg, are calling for a legislative audit, citing concerns over pay, accountability, and wasted taxpayer funds.
The commission has not responded to requests for comment, and its selection process appears non-competitive.
