Evoke is closing UK betting shops due to new taxes, rising costs, and declining revenues.
Evoke, owner of William Hill and 888, is closing retail betting shops across the UK amid financial strain from new gambling taxes introduced in Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ November 2025 Budget.
The company expects annual tax costs to rise by up to £135 million starting in 2027 due to a jump in remote gaming duty and a new online sports betting tax, prompting swift cost-cutting measures including store closures and operational changes.
While the exact number of closures remains undisclosed, Evoke is reviewing strategic options, including potential asset sales, to maximize shareholder value.
Despite a 22% drop in betting revenues and a 4% quarterly decline, the company projects full-year revenue to rise 2% to £1.79 billion.
