Olympic swimmer Ilya Kharun, a 20-year-old two-time bronze medalist from Canada, has announced he will switch to represent the United States, citing his upbringing in Las Vegas and strong American identity.
Born in Montreal, he competed for Canada since 2022, earning medals in the men’s 100- and 200-meter butterfly at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a 2025 World Championships bronze.
He made the announcement on January 26, 2026, and must wait one year before competing for the U.S. under World Aquatics rules, clearing him to join the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
