Anke Gowda, a 75-year-old former bus conductor from Karnataka, received the 2026 Padma Shri in the "Unsung Heroes" category for founding Pustaka Mane, a free rural library housing over 2 million books in more than 20 languages, including rare manuscripts and thousands of dictionaries.
Born in Mandya district, Gowda spent nearly 80% of his income over decades on books, selling his home to expand the collection.
The library, located in Haralahalli village, operates without fees, serving students, researchers, and even Supreme Court judges.
He lives on the premises with his wife and son, managing the library daily.
Plans are underway to formalize the collection under the Anke Gowda Jnana Pratishthana Foundation.
