Three former Bangladeshi police officials sentenced to death for ordering the 2024 Chankharpul massacre that killed six protesters.
A Bangladeshi tribunal has sentenced three former senior police officials—Habibur Rahman, Shudip Kumar Chakraborty, and Sha Alam—to death for their roles in the August 5, 2024, Chankharpul massacre, where police killed six protesters during a nationwide uprising that toppled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-1), established by the interim government, found the violence was premeditated and carried out under orders from senior officers, citing video evidence and witness testimony.
The verdict, delivered on January 26, 2026, is the second from the tribunal, following a prior death sentence against Hasina.
Four other accused are in custody, while four others remain at large.
The ruling was broadcast live on state television.
