Shashi Shekhar Vempati, former Prasar Bharati CEO, received India’s 2026 Padma Shri for media and digital policy work.
Shashi Shekhar Vempati, former CEO of Prasar Bharati, has been awarded the Padma Shri for his work in public broadcasting, media reforms, and digital policy.
The honor, part of India’s 2026 Republic Day awards, recognized 131 individuals including 90 women, 16 posthumous recipients, and six from overseas communities.
Vempati, an IIT Bombay alumnus and co-founder of AI4India, called the award humbling and credited Prime Minister Modi’s vision.
Other recipients include author Ashok Kumar Haldar and former TNAU vice-chancellor K Ramasamy.
The awards were approved by President Droupadi Murmu and include five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri honors.
