Sen. Angus King opposes DHS funding over immigration enforcement concerns after a federal agent shooting, risking a government shutdown.
Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, said he won’t support the current Department of Homeland Security funding package due to concerns over immigration enforcement, citing the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old nurse by federal agents in Minneapolis.
His opposition, shared by Senate Democrats including Chuck Schumer, has stalled a government funding package, threatening a partial shutdown by Friday’s deadline.
King and others urge separating the DHS bill to allow independent negotiations on accountability and reform, arguing that passing the other five appropriations bills would fund 96% of the government.
The standoff continues as lawmakers seek a compromise before the deadline.
