People in Hertfordshire joined the 2026 Big Garden Birdwatch to help track bird populations.
Residents across Hertfordshire are invited to join the 2026 Big Garden Birdwatch, January 23–25, a nationwide citizen science event organized by the RSPB.
Participants count birds in gardens, parks, or balconies for one hour, contributing data on UK bird populations.
Last year, nearly 600,000 people took part across the UK, with around 13,700 from Hertfordshire.
House sparrows, blue tits, woodpigeons, starlings, and blackbirds were most commonly seen, though some species showed declines, possibly due to extreme weather like Storm Eowyn.
The RSPB stresses that every observation, even of no birds, helps track trends and supports mental wellbeing.
The survey, launched in 1979, has gathered over 200 million bird sightings.
