North Wales proposes a 50p weekly council tax rise to fund local policing, pending approval on Jan. 30, 2026.
North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin has proposed a 50p weekly council tax increase—£26.10 annually for a Band D property—to fund local policing, pending approval by the Police and Crime Panel on January 30, 2026.
The rise, backed by a public consultation with 1,300 responses and support from nearly half of respondents for a £25 or higher increase, would boost funding for the Force Control Centre, digital forensics, and support for vulnerable people.
If approved, the change takes effect in April 2026.
The precept covers about half of North Wales Police’s budget, with the rest from the UK government.
The panel, made of councillors and independent members, will review the proposal at a live-streamed meeting in Colwyn Bay.
Residents struggling with payments are urged to contact their local council for help.
