Google to pay $68M to settle lawsuit over Google Assistant's unauthorized recordings since 2016.
Google has agreed to pay $68 million to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging its Google Assistant unlawfully recorded private conversations, including false activations since May 18, 2016.
The settlement, pending approval by U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman, covers users of Google devices who experienced unintended recordings, with claims that data was used for targeted advertising.
Google denied wrongdoing but chose to settle to avoid litigation costs.
Legal fees could reach up to $22.7 million.
This follows a similar $95 million Apple settlement in December 2024 over Siri.
