Google to pay $68M to settle lawsuit over Google Assistant's unauthorized recordings since 2016.
In order to resolve a class-action lawsuit alleging that its Google Assistant illegally recorded private conversations, including false activations since May 18, 2016, Google has agreed to pay $68 million.
The settlement is awaiting U.S. approval.
Users of Google devices who encountered inadvertent recordings and allegations that the data was utilized for targeted advertising are covered by District Judge Beth Labson Freeman.
Despite denying any wrongdoing, Google decided to reach a settlement in order to save money on legal fees.
Up to $22.7 million could be spent on legal fees.
This comes after Apple reached a comparable $95 million settlement over Siri in December 2024.
