Folk artist Gafruddin Mewati awarded India's Padma Shri for preserving Rajasthani folk traditions across generations.
Folk artist Gafruddin Mewati from Alwar, Rajasthan, has been awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, in 2026 for his decades-long efforts to preserve Rajasthani folk traditions.
Recognized for mastering the Bhapang and performing over 2,800 folk songs and couplets, including Mahabharata narratives, Mewati has performed in more than 60 countries and helped sustain a nearly extinct cultural legacy.
The award, announced on Republic Day, honors his work in passing the tradition through eight generations, including his son, a PhD scholar in Mewat culture.
He now advocates for a government-supported cultural school to ensure the survival of folk arts.
