EU and India near landmark trade deal easing tariffs, but climate and rights issues delay final approval.
During their 16th summit in New Delhi, the EU and India are getting close to a significant trade agreement after 20 years.
The goal is to increase exports by lowering Indian tariffs on European products like wine and cars while increasing access for Indian textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT services.
The EU rejected India's request for exemptions from its carbon border tax and refused to include environmental and human rights standards as suspension triggers, creating obstacles for the agreement, which aims to lessen reliance on the United States.
GI provisions have been postponed, and agricultural products and geographical indication protections are still not included.
The European Parliament still has the final say.
