The EU has banned Russian pipeline and LNG gas imports, effective by late 2026 and 2027, to reduce reliance on Russian energy.
A legally binding ban on Russian pipeline and LNG imports has been approved by the European Union.
It will go into effect on September 30, 2027, with LNG imports ceasing on December 31, 2026.
Finalized by EU member states, the move mandates national diversification plans by March 1, 2026, requires origin verification, and imposes fines of up to €40 million, or 3.5% of global turnover, for violations.
As part of larger initiatives to lessen reliance on Russia for energy since the 2022 invasion, the ban comes after a sharp decline in Russian gas imports, which made up around 13% of EU imports in 2025.
By 2027, the European Commission intends to suggest comparable limitations on Russian oil.
