CCHR urges U.S. to strengthen mental health laws after CRPD warns against forced psychiatric treatment.
The Citizens Commission on Human Rights International is pushing for changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act to align with the UN’s CRPD, following a January 15, 2026, CRPD Committee warning that involuntary psychiatric treatment violates human rights.
The committee called for an end to forced hospitalization and medication, citing harm including increased suicide risk, especially among children.
The U.S. has not ratified the CRPD, and current ADA protections do not prevent forced psychiatric detention, with about 1.2 million Americans involuntarily hospitalized annually.
