An Islamic State-linked militant group, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), attacked villages in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo early Sunday, killing at least 25 people.
The assault, which occurred around 4 a.m. in Apakulu and Walese Vonkutu in Ituri Province, included the burning of 15 men in a house and the shooting of seven others, with three additional deaths reported.
The ADF, originally an insurgency against Uganda’s president, has operated in the region for years, carrying out repeated attacks despite joint military operations by Congolese and Ugandan forces.
The violence is part of an ongoing security crisis in eastern Congo, where multiple armed groups, including the Rwanda-backed M23, continue to fuel instability.
