Veteran BBC journalist Mark Tully, known as the "voice of India," has died at 90 in New Delhi.
Born in 1935 in Calcutta to British parents, he spent decades in India, serving as the BBC’s New Delhi bureau chief for 22 years and covering major events including the 1971 Bangladesh war, India’s Emergency, the assassinations of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, and the Babri Masjid demolition.
He was expelled during the Emergency but returned and remained a trusted voice in Indian media.
Tully authored ten books, received India’s Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, and was knighted by the UK.
He continued contributing to BBC programming until 2019 and remained in Delhi, where he passed away at Max Hospital.
