The U.S. is urging Bolivia to expel suspected Iranian spies and designate Iran’s IRGC, Hezbollah, and Hamas as terrorist organizations, part of a broader effort to counter Iranian influence in Latin America.
The push follows Bolivia’s October election of centrist President Rodrigo Paz, who has sought improved ties with Washington.
U.S. officials view Bolivia’s central location and perceived weak oversight as enabling Iranian diplomatic and intelligence operations, especially after Venezuela’s declining role.
The U.S. has supported similar designations in Ecuador and Argentina and is considering similar actions in Chile, Peru, and Panama.
Bolivia’s foreign ministry has not yet taken a firm stance, and the State Department and Iran’s UN mission declined to comment.
