Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren has been posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan for his role in advancing tribal rights and securing Jharkhand’s statehood.
The 2026 Padma Awards, announced on Republic Day, honored 131 individuals, including five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri recipients.
Shibu Soren, a founding leader of the JMM and a key figure in the movement for a separate tribal state, died in August 2025.
His son, current Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, expressed gratitude but reiterated demands for the Bharat Ratna, calling the Padma Bhushan insufficient.
The award was widely celebrated in Jharkhand, where Soren is seen as a symbol of tribal empowerment and social justice.
