Punjab launches underground power lines in Lahore to boost safety ahead of Basant festival.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched a pilot project to replace overhead power lines with underground cables in Lahore’s inner city ahead of the Basant festival, aiming to prevent electrical accidents and fires.
The initiative, approved during a special meeting, will be implemented in three zones, mandate underground cabling in new housing, and include a steering committee to coordinate with LESCO and other agencies.
Officials cited thousands of kilometers of exposed wires as a major safety risk, especially during rainfall, following tragedies like the Karachi Gul Plaza fire.
The government pledged to maintain internet and other services during construction.
Separately, the chief minister emphasized education reforms, including scholarships, laptop distribution, AI integration in curricula, and technical training aligned with market needs.
