More than 680 Australians have been honoured in the 2026 Australia Day awards for contributions in sports, law, research, politics, and community service.
Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman, celebrated for her 2000 Sydney Games victory and lasting impact on national unity and youth, has been appointed a Companion (AC) of the Order of Australia.
Also receiving the AC is Chris Kourakis, South Australia’s chief justice since 2012, recognised for his judicial leadership and service to the Greek community, reflecting his upbringing as one of ten children of migrant parents.
