Nalco plans to replace coal power with 200–300 MW of green energy plus storage to cut emissions, despite higher costs.
Nalco, India’s state-owned aluminium producer, plans to develop 200–300 MW of green power with battery storage to replace coal-based energy in its smelting operations, aiming to cut emissions from current captive coal plants that account for 80% of its carbon output.
Despite higher green power costs—₹4.5–5 per unit versus ₹3–3.5 for coal—the company is pursuing power purchase agreements, in-house renewables, and consultant-led solutions for reliable, round-the-clock clean energy.
It has already installed 198 MW of wind and 1.02 MW of rooftop solar.
Expanding core projects include a new alumina refinery, Pottangi bauxite mines, coal mining in Utkal D and E blocks, and a 0.5 million tonne smelter upgrade to boost annual capacity to 3.1 million tonnes.
Nalco planea reemplazar la energía del carbón con 200-300 MW de energía verde además de almacenamiento para reducir las emisiones, a pesar de los mayores costos.
