TikTok suffered major U.S. outages amid its new U.S. joint venture launch, with no confirmed cause.
On January 25, 2026, thousands of Americans used TikTok. According to DownDetector, which recorded over 35,000 outage reports, there were widespread app outages during a significant winter storm, with problems including the inability to post, view content, or load the For You page. In order to address national security concerns and prevent a possible federal ban, TikTok recently completed a deal to establish a U.S.-based joint venture with investors including Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX, which coincided with the disruption. With a majority-American board and CEO Adam Presser, the new organization will be in charge of U.S. operations, but TikTok did not address whether the outage was connected to the reorganization. The cause of the technical problems is still unknown.
