Israel's top prosecutor calls government plan to skip legal reviews unlawful, citing rule of law risks.
Israel’s Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has declared a government proposal to bypass legal review for cabinet decisions unlawful, warning it would undermine the rule of law and enable actions violating legal norms.
The plan, which would eliminate binding legal opinions from the attorney general, lacks proper drafting and legal oversight, according to a joint opinion by Baharav-Miara and Deputy Attorney General Gil Limon.
They argue the move threatens government accountability, risks misuse of power—especially near elections—and contradicts Supreme Court precedent.
Despite objections, the government is expected to advance the change, prompting legal experts to anticipate a High Court challenge.
