The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated mental health and career counsellors in all affiliated schools starting January 19, 2026, following a Public Interest Litigation over rising student stress and poor career guidance.
Schools must appoint one Counselling and Wellness Teacher per 500 students and a Career Counsellor for Classes 9–12, with a 1:500 ratio.
Eligible professionals must hold relevant postgraduate degrees and complete a 50-hour CBSE-approved training program.
Responsibilities include counselling, crisis intervention, and mental health awareness.
Smaller schools can join a Hub and Spoke model for support.
The move aims to standardize student well-being and career planning across schools.
