On Republic Day 2026, 45 Indians were awarded the Padma Shri in the 'unsung heroes' category for exceptional contributions in education, healthcare, culture, and community service.
Among them are Anke Gowda, a former bus conductor who founded Pustak Mane, the world’s largest free library with over two million books in 20 languages, and Mumbai paediatrician Armida Fernandes, who established Asia’s first human milk bank.
Other honorees include Bhagwandas Raikwar, a Bundeli war art practitioner, 90-year-old Bhiklya Ladakya Dhinda, a tribal musician preserving traditional music, and Budri Thati, who built schools in Naxal-affected Chhattisgarh.
The awardees, many from marginalized or remote regions, were recognized for their lifelong dedication to advancing education, health, cultural preservation, and sustainability.
