A Ghanaian man was jailed for sharing a false TikTok claim about a plot to assassinate the president, based on unverified social media rumors.
A 30-year-old Ghanaian laundry attendant, Ahmed Hassan Abdul Razzaq, has been remanded in custody by the Adenta Circuit Court after allegedly posting a TikTok video on January 20, 2026, claiming two military officers were plotting to assassinate President John Dramani Mahama. Arrested the next day in Adjiringanor, he admitted creating the video but said he had never met the officers and based his post on an unverified social media claim he could not identify. The Ghana Police Service, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, charged him with spreading false news intended to cause fear and panic. The court denied his plea and ordered continued detention until his next appearance on February 9, 2026.
