A fundraiser on Feb. 28 honors Wilson Shepherd, a 23-year-old triathlete who died from a hidden heart condition, to support cardiac screenings for young people.

A fundraiser called CRY for Wilson will be held on February 28 at Hawcoat Park Sports Club in Barrow to honor 23-year-old triathlete Wilson Shepherd, who died in 2023 from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. Organized by his mother, Lesley Mease, the event aims to raise funds for Cardiac in the Young (CRY), supporting ECG screenings for people aged 14 to 35. Performances by the Just in Time Dance Band and Barrow band Voce are donated. Tickets cost £12.50. CRY and Mease are advocating for expanded access to screenings, noting at least 16 young UK deaths weekly from undetected heart conditions. A screening weekend costs £14,000 and can test 100 individuals. Proceeds will support local efforts to prevent future tragedies.
